Ajit Gupte
Ambassador of India to Germany
Biography
Ajit Gupte is India’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, appointed in October 2024. A career diplomat and expert on China, he is fluent in Mandarin and has extensive exposure to foreign policy developments in India’s neighbourhood and Europe.
From 2010 to 2014, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Berlin, strengthening India-Germany ties.
In New Delhi, he held senior positions as Joint Secretary (Haj) and later as Joint Secretary overseeing India’s global development aid (2015-17).
As Ambassador to Denmark (2017-2021), he transformed a dormant relationship into a vibrant partnership. He then served as Ambassador to Egypt (2021-2024), where he elevated the relationship to a Strategic Partnership, facilitating historic visits – President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi as Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day 2023, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cairo in June 2023.
